Mail Gadget Update

Well, it's taken longer than anyone (including us) expected, but we can finally offer an update regarding the mail gadget. We're hoping that sharing this information doesn't jinx us and cause further delays :)

The gadget was pulled due to a security issue, which we initially believed could be fixed in a relatively quick fashion. We take security very seriously, and once we became aware of the issue, disabling this gadget was the best way to protect our users.

As our developers worked with the Hotmail developers to see how we could restore the gadget's functionality (while ensuring your data was secure), it became evident that the task was originally much larger than anyone anticipated. The gadget had to be rewritten to "talk" to Hotmail in an entirely new way, and the Hotmail team needed to add new functionality on their end as well. The time needed to design, implement, and test this new functionality is the reason that the gadget has been broken for so long.

However, there's hope on the horizon! While we can't yet give you a definite date (that would be really bad luck), we believe our developers have entered the home stretch with their bug fixes, and the light at the end of the tunnel is growing ever closer. Once the gadget comes back online, we'll return it to the directory so you can once again add it (if you have removed it), and of course, we'll post a very happy blog post here :)

There is a slight catch, however, that we wanted to alert you to. When the gadget returns, you will need to have a Windows Live Hotmail account to use it. This is the "new" version of Hotmail, which offers much richer functionality than the old one. The good news is that upgrading to Windows Live Hotmail is free, and can be done today, by clicking the link in the upper left hand corner of the screen after you log in to Hotmail. The link should look like this:

If you haven't yet tried Windows Live Hotmail, all of the cool new features are sure to keep you occupied until we get the gadget back online. :) Your email address will not be changed when you upgrade to Windows Live Hotmail.

Thanks very much for everyone's understanding - we know you've been anxious to get this gadget back, and we're doing everything we can to get it to you.

Sincerely,

The Live.com Team

hey all,
I've just installed the Live.com mail Gadget. I like it - good work.

Now I've got it though - I instantly want more :)

Essentially all it does is tell you that you've got more mail. I want richer functionality than that. I want to do all of the following without havig to launch another window into Hotmail proper:
-Read the contents of the mail
-Mark it as read/unread
-Delete a mail
-Junk a mail
-Compose a mail
-View all of my folders
-Move a mail between folders
-Print a mail
-Have the same right-click context menu that I get in Hotmail proper. I'm not sure if this is technologically possible or not but seeing as its only a bit of javascript - I don't see why not!
-View Contacts
-View Calendar

I know some of this stuff is difficult to do in such a small piece of screen real estate but AJAX is a pretty powerful tool right? :)

So there you go - a big wishlist. I'll be waiting... :)

Will there be an update that let's us have more control over the page design.. I would love the ability to make and share my own feeds, but if I could design the header and page too, I would really enjoy it I think

Its good to know that the mail gadget will be back soon! At a very early point in time, the user had the ability to delete email messages directly from live.com using the mail gadget. Will this ever be coming back?

Humm.... what page are you referring to?? The Onecare Live homepage? It's aimed at the normal computer user, so cramming the site with way too much techical wording would be a "turn off" for the normal user; therefore I am ok with the volume of the info - I'm not even sure if other anti-virus sites that offer programs have more info, but however I advice everybody to stay well clear of OneCare Live as the program pretty much sucks: http://www.liveside.net/blogs/main/archive/2007/03/04/onecare-places-last-in-av-comparison.aspx

And once again; my name in the upper right corner on the Live.com page (right next to the (Start Over) button) appears 'broken'; this is how it looks: "Jón Þór" - and when will I be able to customize my Favorites gadget; that is, have my links appear default in folders - but not in list view, and erasing the annoying number that appears beside the name of the gadget (the number that shows how many links you have).

And the Celebrities pages are way cooler than our pages! :( I would love to see the option of being able to designing our own page - with as much ease as possible - or at least give us the option of adding our own icon next to the name of the gadgets; how come some gadgets have icons and some don't?

Oh, and by the way - I'm propably one of few that really dislikes, in this so-called space age, to have to wait for webpages to load - this never used to be like this.

HEAR  ME PLEASE , OH LORDS (of Microsoft Live.com land!)

I was looking at your ïnformation"pitching us to join live.com for the firewall, virus protection, etc. and etc. for just 60 dollars a year. I am impressed by the price aand confident of quality because it is Microsoft. BUT BUT BUT.....

I rated each page of that section as low. The information offered is miniscule.  Part of the new  äll good writers are in their 20's""addiction to oversimplistic brevety. We (customers) really are capable of thought. Complex thought. Understanding, even.

For the love of God, PLEASE recognize our need for information. More than "We will give you a firewall."Why is it superior or even equal to MacAfee? What does it protect agai nst? Free updates COULD be a good thing. IF the updates are made weekly it is a great thing. If made once a year, a bad thing. See? See Scotty ask. See Scotty happy. Scotty is happy when Microsoft knows he can think. He is more happy when Microsoft write to him as though they know he can understand sentences with more than 6 or 7 words.

Your brevety sacrifices information which would actually inform me enough to become the basis for a good decision. The sacrifice is not a mature one.

Oh yes! I remem ber. Good writer must be in their 20's Not intellectually  aged enough to achieve maturity. My apologies! :) (That trruly was an attempt at humor. Honest.)

Please know that it would be a good idea to study journalism as a model for your sales presentations written on pages.

Your present pages do OK as a very VERY basic introductory paragraph. In a newspaper they may be the lead paragraph. But do what the good newspapers do. Write a few more paragraphs with each one cuttin a bit more deeply into the information treeasure chest than the previous one.

That way WE CUSTOMERS can decide whether to read the next paragraph or not. When there is ONLY the 1st grade level of knowledge available, we have no abilituy to choose to study the second level or the third and so - on. GIVE US THE INFORMATION and we will CHOOSE how much of it to read! :)

Hi Mike, I was wondering if this new, rewritten "protocol" of communication between WinLiveHotmail and the Mail gadget will end up being publicly available or for public use (aka via rss/atom/webservice like methods), so other services like the windows vista sidebar gadgets or netvibes or apple widgets be able to access it so anyone can have thier WinLiveHotmail account checkable from their favorite "start" page/reader/app?

If not, is there a plan to enable this kind of sdk for this "protocol" on the near future...

Thanks, and also thanks for the update.
